Herman grew up in Cape Town’s northern suburbs and obtained a BA Hons in Philosophy from Stellenbosch University. After a short stint as a language teacher he returned to his alma mater to study translation and editing. When Herman is not managing language projects or translating texts into Afrikaans, his beloved mother tongue, he is reading, scuba diving, sampling artisanal coffee, planning his next trip to an interesting corner of the globe, or enjoying a transcendent experience with the help of Mozart, Mahler and Bach.
Favourite word/phrase: The unexamined life is not worth living.
Secret superpower: Processing extensive texts in a short time and finding creative equivalents for “untranslatable words and phrases”.
The thing that I love most about my job is: Bridging the linguistic divide between peoples and cultures, and expanding my general knowledge in the process.
